CLEVELAND — Dec. 11, 2009 — As snowy, icy weather sets in, we’re married to our indoor spaces. And with the onset of many winter holidays, family and guests tend to pile in, making our confined spaces even closer quarters. Muddy footprints, musty smells and messy kitchens are no joy to deal with during a season of entertaining. Keep your sanity with a number of household cleaning solutions that are sure to turn cabin fever into a warm and cheery home this season.

Take a look at these 14 quick and easy tips from www.cleanhomeideas.com:

  • Settled dust: Consider installing a central vacuum system that removes all dust and dirt and transports it to a central source away from living spaces. These cordless units eat up less space than traditional vacuums and are conveniently installed in storage closets, basements or attics. A central vacuum unit is sure to reduce your time cleaning and increase your time spent with family and friends during the holidays. Check out  Vacuflo® and Dirt Devil® for more information.
  • Dirty microwave: Put a dish of water in the microwave with a lemon slice and bring it to a boil. Wait until there is plenty of steam, then open and wipe out the inside with a damp cloth.
  • Greasy pans: Add a tablespoon of vinegar to your dishwater to help remove the grease more easily.
  • Dirty pots and pans (with baked-on food grime): Boil Coca-Cola in the pan and watch as the baked-on grime comes right off.
  • Ice trays: Soak your trays in vinegar to remove hard-water buildup.
  • Musty books: Place several dryer sheets between the pages of the book and place it in a Ziploc® bag for a couple of weeks. Placing a book in clean kitty litter is also known to remove musty odors.
  • Brass tarnish: Soak your brass in cherry-flavored Kool-Aid for 10 minutes to remove tarnish.
  • General carpet stains: Rub club soda onto the stain with a sponge and blot with paper towels.
  • Wine stains on carpet: Pour household salt on the stain. This should remove the stain after several minutes.
  • Glass coffeepot: Fill the stained pot with Coca-Cola® and let it sit overnight. Wash out the Coke® the following morning.
  • Crayon on the walls: Use a hair dryer to heat the wax from the crayon, then wipe with a paper towel.
  • Garbage disposal: Freshen your disposal with a quarter-cup of lemon juice. Let it sit in your drain for 10 minutes.
  • Crock pot: Fill your grimy crock pot with soapy water and cook on high for one hour.
  • Dirty glassware: Use a vinegar-saturated sponge to clean spotted glassware.
